MEET FERNANDO & VÍCTOR, fashion photographers

26 Nov

Fernando Santos & Víctor Nicolás (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic)

If you check any fashion magazine in the Dominican Republic, it wouldn’t be any surprise if you run into a fashion spread made by Fernando & Víctor, two young professional photographers who are rapidly becoming an icon in the fashion industry.

Fernando Santos (24) and Víctor Nicolás (27) met 7 years ago in Santo Domingo. Both of them started to study Advertising. Even though Víctor graduated in 2005, they both realized that pitching ads and creating commercial slogans wasn’t their passion.

In 2006, Fernando dropped out from school and decided to go to Barcelona to start taking classes of professional photography. A year later, he moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, with Victor where they took fashion photography classes, as well as advertising photography, styling and fashion.

Fernando & Víctor started frequenting back home, impressed by the rapid evolution of the local fashion industry and were able to do at least 5 editorials in Dominican magazines, while still living in Buenos Aires. In December 2008, they decided to move back to Santo Domingo, after concluding their studies and learned everything Argentina could offer.

They didn’t wait long to be embraced by the fashion industry and started working in most of the Dominican fashion magazines, and to have their name heard all over the society. “I wasn’t expecting the Dominican audience to receive us as well as they did” -Fernando says- “It’s amazing to see how much the fashion has grown here, and I believe it has because Dominican Republic rapidly became a nest for new models, people started to pay attention to editorials and started to appreciate a little more the local industry.”

One of the reasons they have achieved success could be their completely different point of view towards style and art. When they merge both perspectives, they create a new one that is in fact liked by a wider audience.

As for the future, they know fashion photography will more likely to expand, even though print media is getting budget cuts, losing staff and closing some of them. Perhaps the future is online media, where they could express themselves without that much editorial censorship and enhanced with audiovisual material.

Also, the duo is starting to consider to move to a fashion capital (such as New York City), a place where they could live from fashion and get inspired by what’s happening in the world. “The goal is to work someplace else, without forgetting our personal mission to improve the industry in the Dominican Republic”, explains Victor.

Rui Delgado's Press ID for DominicanaModa 2010

¡Buenas tardes!

Even though the summer is over, you don’t feel that way in the Dominican Republic, where the temperature is generally 30-35ºC throughout the entire year. In Santo Domingo, October means fashion!! Tonight is the grand opening for DominicanaModa, the most important fashion week in the Caribbean.

Being originally from the Dominican Republic, I feel very happy to be able to be here and I can’t wait to see what the Dominican Republic has to offer for the world, and, of course, the grand finale is with the Dominican legend Oscar de la Renta.

Please stay tuned for the runway reviews!

Adolfo Domínguez just arrived to Santo Domingo and I am very happy that I was in the country for the opening event. The store is located in the shining new shopping mall Blue Mall, right in the heart of the Piantini neighborhood in Santo Domingo.

The attendees were lucky enough to start that night their shopping in the new store. And also, there was a small fashion preview about what Domínguez designed and would be in stock at the store. Of course, there was a lot of champagne around for the public figures, press and media.

Rui Delgado @ Casa de Campo (Romana, Dominican Republic)

And we’re back!

As must of you know (or I hope you would, since I announced it everywhere), I’ve been in the Dominican Republic for the last two months having some holidays and doing some preparations for future projects.

Even though I missed the opportunity to be in New York Fashion Week and then for Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week as I planned, I wouldn’t change my time here for anything else because I expect 2011 to be huge for me and I hope VANGUARDINK.com could reflect all that.

I would also stay in October for some compromises and for DominicanaModa’10 (Fashion Week here in Santo Domingo).  Thank you so much for your patient and I’m very sorry for those of you who wanted me to go to your event and I wasn’t even able to respond to the invitation, I promise I would get back to you now.

I’ll keep you posted of everything! Now I would put some info about all that has happened in this summer!

VINTAGE PIRELLI AD

26 May

I couldn’t stop laughing about this Vintage commercial from the Dominican Republic. It’s from the early 70s (very early) to promote the Italian tires PIRELLI. Also, it’s funny to see how people used to dress in Santo Domingo from that time.

If you understand Spanish, I’m sure you’d laugh about this.

RED BULL FORMULA 1 SANTO DOMINGO

25 May

Last sunday, more than 200,000 spectators watched Red Bull F1’s Jaime Alguersuari bring Formula One to Santo Domingo.

Afterwards Toro Rosso driver Jaime said: “It has been amazing to be in the Dominican Republic. I am very happy that I shared this moment with the best audience ever. I enjoyed every minute on the track.”

The event was organized by RED BULL and Puma. I only wish I was in the Dominican Republic for this event and I am so glad that there was such a great response from the audience. This also means that they’re studying the possibility to do a circuit in Santo Domingo, a real race. CAN’T WAIT!!!
