MEET ALFONSO VELEZ, the ‘Russian Bear’ in NYC

29 Nov

Alfonso Velez (New York, NY)

Over the summer, I ran into Alfonso Velez’ music and really liked his work. His music takes a very interesting angle due to the fact that he was raised by a Mexican father and Cuban mother all over the globe: Moscow (in the early 90s, when the Russian Federation was handling with the democratization and opening up to an international market), Buenos Aires, Puerto Rico and New Jersey.

His last album was released last month and it’s worth checking out. Please take 4 minutes of your time and check this instant classic song “Love for Life”.

If you like it (and I’m sure you will), you can download for free his entire album on his website.

I’ll be putting event info and other details on Velez.

PeopleMatter by Nic*Rad @ Rare Gallery (NYC)

15 Apr

PeopleMatter by Nic*Rad (New York City)

Nic*Rad’s media project “PeopleMatter” is comprised of 99 paintings of traditional and new Media personalities exhibited, and then given away to those in attendance at Rare Gallery.

This gift experiment is conducted in response to the impact of technological advances that allow for increased sharing of information and content. The project will survey distorting effects of this transition on emerging and developing ideas.

Subjects were chosen based on personal Googling, Twittering, Hyperlinking, Facebooking, RSS culling and otherwise staggering around the internet and media cyberscape.

Recipients of the work will be encouraged to participate in the on going gift actions of the PeopleMatter community as well as setting the second hand value of  art works as conversation vessel, novelty, or digital and physical barter.

You shouldn’t miss it, I totally loved Nic*Rac’s work and I’m sure you all will too! The show was installed on April 3rd, and can be viewed in total up until April 29th when the work will be given away.

“ELFERING – 1642″ by Matthias Schaller @ Danzinger Projects (NYC)

12 Apr

"ELFERING - 1642" by Matthias Schaller (Dillingen, Germany)

Matthias Schaller is presenting a new exhibition opening this Thursday in New York City. The title “Elfering – 1642” refers to the famous German collector, Gert Elfering, and the number allocated by Christie’s to Elfering’s single owner sale in October of 2005. The auction comprised 135 works that Elfering had defined as the distillation of his interests, and featured the most famous pictures by the masters of fashion and editorial photography – Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon – as well as works by Man Ray, Thomas Struth, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The sale fetched over $7 million and its success signaled the ascension of the editorial/fashion genre to the highest levels of price and desirability in photography.

Matthias Schaller was born in Dillingen, Germany, in 1965. Over the last decade he has been widely exhibited and published in Europe but “Elfering -1642” will be his first U.S. gallery show. The opening is in April 15th from 6 to 8PM at Danzinger Projects.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere @ Team Gallery (NYC)

9 Apr

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by Ryan McGinley (c) 2010 Teamgal.com

Team Gallery is presenting an exhibition of new work by the New York-based photographer Ryan McGinley. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere will run from the 18th of March through the 17th of April 2010.

For his latest exhibition, Ryan McGinley has shifted his focus away from constructing a youthful sublime within the boundless American landscape and has concentrated instead on creating imagery within the confines of his New York studio. The result is a surprisingly restrained, open-ended study of black and white portraiture. Here we see McGinley not as a chronicler of youthful adventure, but as an engine for an almost scientific cataloguing of a kind of emotional optimism.
